How Air Domes Keep Your Lungs Healthy

Sports Dome By now, you probably know all about what makes air structures so great—low cost, amazing indoor space, and protection from the weather—but here’s another benefit you might not have thought of: protection from air pollution.

Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, humankind has had a massive effect on the air in our atmosphere. It’s nobody’s fault, really—it’s just the price that we’ve paid for progress. Automobiles, energy production, manufacturing—these have all revolutionized the way we live our lives, but there has been a cost. Air pollution.

There’s a lot of controversy over the effect of pollutants on the environment, but it is pretty clear that poor air quality can be damaging to those that breathe it in. Diseases such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, and other lung function decreasing ailments have all been linked to air pollution.

The Importance of Clean Air for Sport

But how does air quality affect sport? Just think about how much more air you breathe when you’re exerting yourself! The more activity you do, the more oxygen your body’s muscles need to function. Huffing and puffing poor quality air means you’re absorbing more harmful components, as well as depriving your body of oxygen.

Many athletes train under low oxygen environments (under water, at high altitude, etc.) to help their body adapt. In a game, though, low oxygen means you won’t be able to perform at your best. Air full of pollutants decreases the amount of oxygen available to you.

Prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing paid astronomical amounts and took drastic measures to cut the heavy smog that normally blankets the city in thesummer. Had they not done a thing, it looked like many events would be cancelled. Many of the world’s largest cities are notorious for poor air quality and smog due to densely populated areas, heavy automobile and industrial pressures, and warm temperatures.

Can we play in a bubble to keep the pollution away?

Now here’s an idea! There is some degree of air pollution around us all the time. The only sure-fire way to fully protect yourself is to live in a bubble. But it’s pretty hard to play any sport in a bubble, isn’t it? Not at all!

Multi-sport air domes are not only a cost-effective and effective solution for year-round sport facilities, they also protect occupants from the damaging effects of air pollution. This is another great benefit to add to the pro column of air supported structures. This protection is especially important in heavily populated cities where air quality can sometimes dip to unsafe levels—like Toronto or Beijing.

Air filtration system

And if you’re thinking to yourself, “but the air that is blown into the domes is the same as it is outside,” don’t forget that the inflation system of a dome also includes a filtration system that can be customized to meet the unique air quality issues of the area.

Air domes let sports teams forget about air quality and let them focus on what’s important: having a great time playing the sport that they love!
