US Open: New York's Top Tennis Event

The US Open—New York City’s Top Tennis Event

Woman playing tennisThe United States Open Tennis Championship, or US Open (not to confused with the PGA’s US Open for golfers) is arguably the biggest tennis tournament of the year. It is a modern continuation of the oldest tennis championship in the world, the U.S. National Championship, which started in 1881. To say it’s a prestigious tournament would be an understatement.

Each year for the past 135 years, the world’s top tennis talent meets in New York City to decide the season’s Grand Slam champion. The tournament starts on the last Monday of August and last for two weeks, so the tournament covers the Labor Day long weekend. Like Labor Day, it marks the end of the Summer and the end of major Tennis Championships for the year—it is the fourth and last tournament of the Grand Slam.

Because the US Open has such history in New York, it’s no wonder that the sport has a relatively high popularity in the area. The Farley Group experiences first-hand this tennis passion with the number of tennis domes that we’ve installed and maintained in New York City and surrounding areas.

There are over 20 Farley domes in the New York City and Long Island areas!

It’s great to see so much passion for the sport and the US Open brings this passion to the forefront of the country for 2 weeks. We even have advertising for the US Open on the side of the City View Dome, shown here.

This year looks to be another great one with top players in peak condition and a lot of up and comers looking to make a name for themselves and finish out the season with a bang.

On the men’s side, going into the tournament in number one spot is Novak Djokovic who won last year in New York, but this hasn’t been a great summer for him. Having exited Wimbledon early, some are not as sure of his chances at the US Open. Andy Murray, who beat Milos Raonic at Wimbledon, might be a threat to winning this year’s title (Raonic might even have a shot too).

Looking at the women’s, there likely won’t be many surprises as Serena Williams is expected to continue to dominate her way through the competition. It might not be a definite thing to call, though, as there is some high level competition for her this year. Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza, and Agnieszka Radwanska are just some of the amazing players that would like to, and have an opportunity at, dethroning Serena.

The beautiful thing about tennis is that no matter what the statistics and past games have shown, a little bit of determination, the right attitude, and maybe a little bit of luck can all come together to create a surprise result. Don’t count any players out, they’re all top-tier athletes and miracles happen all the time!

What will you be expecting at this year’s US Open?
