Beat the Heat: Summer Sports in a Dome

Beating the Heat: Summer Sports in a Dome

In this blog (and elsewhere on our website) we talk a lot about how great domes are for the winter, but we don’t often talk about the unique benefits to playing sports indoors during the summer. It may seem counterintuitive to think about playing indoors while the weather is clear and the sun is out, but 2016s summer in particular may have many rethinking the whole outdoor play concept.

In North America, this has been the hottest summer on record and according to TIME, summers are only going to get even hotter. While hot weather is great in short doses, or if you’re doing something cool like swimming, extreme heat can be incredibly dangerous. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration—all can result from hyperthermia or increased body temperature.

Heat related injuries during the summer aren’t uncommon, especially during sports and activities. It’s easy to get caught up in the game and not realize that you’re not feeling well. Most people don’t feel the effects of the heat until the drive home.

Heat stress can quickly lead to heat exhaustion—a serious condition—so it’s important to be able to quickly identify when you or another teammate is overheating. Some signs of heat stress include: dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headache, muscle or abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it means it’s time to take a break, find some shade, and drink some water, otherwise you could end up needing some emergency care.

And here’s a solution you might have overlooked: on those extremely hot days, you might be best off moving that soccer or tennis game indoors.

Indoor sport facilities like air domes are great for when the weather is cold, rainy, or snowy, but they’re also the solution to avoiding heat-related injuries. An indoor environment is a lot easier to control and the temperature is much more consistent than it could ever be outside.

Some might assume that air domes are only seasonal facilities that provide indoor spaces in the winter, but a good number of our domes are actually permanent structures. They stay inflated year round to provide warmth and shelter during the winter, as well as provide the perfect space out of the sun during the summer.

Our domes have fields for sports like soccer, tennis, football, golf…you name the sport and it can be played inside of a dome! There are even indoor pools underneath domes if you’re looking for the absolute best way to stay cool on a really hot day.

So if you’re looking to avoid overheating this summer, but don’t want to miss out on your favourite sport, keep an eye out for a sports dome near you. Bubbles are one of the best ways to stay cool when playing sports in the summer.
